November 11, 20212020 MAPS Christmas Party for Members/Volunteers
November 16, 2021From Ken Ramsay: Last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday a bunch of us went to Soplata’s, under the leadership of Jim Jackson, to prepare the Cutlass for transport to MAPS. We really lucked out on the weather however the ground was very muddy thus making it difficult for the crane trucks to maneuver. (Photo above, The Crew)
- First order of business was to remove the wing tips. Our crane truck worked very nicely.
- Lowering the tip on the trailer.
- Some of the bolts took sledge happen persuasion. After all they have been out in the elements for over 60 years.
- And more persuasion.
- Loading the second wingtip.
- A come-along had to be used to retract the nose gear.
- Removing the left afterburner to reduce weight and to improve the center of gravity.
- Lowering the afterburner onto the crane truck for temporary safe keeping.
- Now comes lifting the whole aircraft.
- We called in a 75 ton crane truck to make the aircraft lift.
- Airborne after 60+ years and being lowered onto the trailer. It took a few tries to figure out the center of gravity for the best lift.
- On the trailer and ready to come to MAPS. Awaiting a travel permit as the plane is 20 feet wide.
